Have you considered purchasing a download of this card from The National Archives. This will allow you to see it for yourself

    Hi Anonymous,
If this relates to soldiers of the British Army, I would recommend using this website instead:

    Hi Helen,
Based upon further documents coming to light, a Life Story has been added for him
    https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/7700670

    Keith_H commented  ·

    Hi Helen,
I see he appears in the 1871 census, recorded on 2 April 1871, as a sailor, which ties in with the statement on the service record that says his service started in 1869.

    Source Citation
    Class: RG10; Piece: 1134; Folio: 208; Page: 25; GSU roll: 827781

    Civil Parish: Vessels
    Town: Portsmouth Harbour
    County/Island: Hampshire
    Country: England
    Registration district: Portsea Island
    Sub-registration district: Portsea Town
ED, institution, or vessel: Duke of Wellington, including her Tenders, the Victory, Black Eagle, Firequeen, and Sprightly

Did you see my e-mail message via LOTFWW?

    Best wishes
    Keith

    Keith_H commented  ·

I see from the second page of his service record that he, born 7 October 1851, was scheduled to serve up to his 50th birthday, but he retired from the Royal Navy on 10 August 1898.

    Keith_H commented  ·

    Hi Helen,
I have asked Trevor to look on the roll, and he found nothing. On the basis that canteen staff are on the medal roll, and Trevor could not find him, I am afraid this request will be turned down, but it is acknowledged that he did serve in prior years as a sailor, and was talented enough to reach the rank of CPO.

With regard to your other point, I have been told that there is a "contact" button somewhere on the IWM website, which is used for all requests from members of the public.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

    Best wishes

    Hi Helen,
Given his age, I would expect to see him on the medal roll, either as an Admiralty Civilian or as a reinstated CPO, as this would give the green light for him to be added.

    Thanks, Keith

    Keith_H commented  ·

    Hi Helen,
Please can you prove that he received a British War Medal, for having undertaken in excess of 28 days mobilised service during WW1?
The way in which the database was populated, it omitted all sailors who joined before 1902, like this man. (12 years was the time served in the Royal Navy, with some men opting to serve longer, and many others returned to civilian live, but were paid a retainer to be on the books of the reserve.)

His service record can be accessed via Ancestry. The Volunteers only have access to Ancestry if the individual concerned has paid a subscription, which I have not.

Alternatively, it can be downloaded for a fee.

    Hello Ian
Lives of the First World War is a source-based project. In order for a Life Story to be created, source-based evidence, such as a service record, is required. Can you please provide the requisite evidence that will be the business case for adding him to the database.

If he died and has a CWGC record, this would be useful. If he has a service record, this could be another source which would justify his addition to the database. I am not finding any source material on this man.

    Kind regards

There is a C E Brooking who was a pre-war soldier. He was in the Artillery, working with horses. In 1917 he transferred to the Royal Engineers. I think this could be your man, but he never served in the Middlesex Regiment https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/521355

    Keith_H commented  ·

I wish you well in your researching endeavours. If you do find out his service number and regiment, please get in touch via the forum, or by the following Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/302369916601668/

His medals should have his service number engraved on them.

    Thanks

In the parlance of the project:

Each entry is referred to not as a soldier, but as a Life Story. If people can add as many details as possible, they come together and "tell" a life story.

    I hope this clarifies matters.

    Kind regards

    Hello Anonymous,
It would appear that he is already in the database. It contains the names of soldiers who went overseas. Please can you confirm that you cannot find him

If you have his service number and his regiment, it should be possible to find him.

    Hello Grant

Your "life story narrative" is acknowledged. This forum is just a means to an end, and it will be destroyed in a few days time. What will continue, as a Permanent Digital Memorial is the database, which is the happy ending.

Here is the profile that has been created for this Home Service soldier
    https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/7700532

To this end, please do enhance the entry in the database, so that future generations can benefit from your knowledge. Please do amend any incomplete naming details.

    Hello Lindsey,
If you have his medals, this would be useful, as it would give his service number. Would you happen to know his regiment?

I could not see anyone of that name in the database.

Given that he served, and survived, my advice would be to write to the MOD Medals Office in Gloucester, as they may have further details.
