I made a similar suggestion to your 19:36 comment in that when entering large volumes of men it would be far more useful if you could attach the same source to a number of life stories rather than having to retype the source for each one.

I completely agree that this sort of making the site easier would have the double benefit of reducing error as if you enter the data once and link it to multiple individuals then you KNOW its consistent across eg: all 150 individuals, as you recorded.

I could easily see someone finding a military establishment on the 1911 census and want to enter the enter barracks his could easily run to several hundred men. That's a lot of retyping and source of typing errors that could be avoided by linking one source to multiple individuals.

The searching algorithm seems to be pretty specific in terms of matching. If something isn't exact it doesn't find records. I can see this as a major problem for the type of user we have all learned to hate in family history ie: the type that does a search finds a record and assumes that it MUST be "their" person as it was the only result.

The form presenting the results of the search is good and I like the filter boxes idea. However to make that work the initial search box really should default to fuzzy searching. Alternatively in the filter box form allow searching on forenames/surname/service number/unit as primary fields with exact search/fuzzy search boxes (or allow wild cards).

Also if you implement fuzzy search PLEASE DON'T use the dated soundex searching use a Metaphone or Double Metaphone search. It gives far better results than soundex.

Which is perfectly understood, and it wasn't for my benefit I suggested the improvement.

So posting it here as a comment has very little value as it will NOT be seen by the vast majority of the user base. This is exactly the sort of information that should be prompted to the users when they enter the data. If users are unsure what to enter then the quality of the data entry will naturally suffer.

It would be such a simple thing to provide a help box eg: either a tooltip, text on the form or a clickable info box. SOMETHING to clarify to users what they should enter.

Your text is an excellent example of what could go in such a help box its just fairly useless being hidden away in a comments section of an ideas forum.

The answer is in the quote you provided ie: "unless that's the only option"!!!

It is simply not an option for Scottish records. Brightsolid the same partners as for this project hold the reference data and it is simply not available on other sites.
