I've attached a few records to each now which hopefully make the connections clear. From the details in the Royal Navy record the clerk is clearly the man in 1901 and 1891 censuses, and 1882 birth record. Father's address on navy record is Romford, and shown as postmaster which also link back to those censuses.

In HAC records, clearly the same man as 1911 census, and those details also match the earlier censuses in terms of age and birth place (date of birth does seem to wander around between 1882 and 1884 across the various sources). A bank clerk also a pretty good match for someone with earlier experience as paymaster clerk in the navy.

No other matches for births in Hackney in the timeframe.

Don't know why he appears to have answered no to the previous service question, possibly didn't want to get lumbered with being a clerk again.

The forename is wrongly transcribed on the Canadian records (it’s clearer further on in the record)-everything is explained in the divorce record I’d attached to the one I nominated as primary (where I’d also corrected the forename)

Many thanks. Looks like one of his brothers has multiple duplicates too, but I'll raise a separate request for those.

Just realised I missed this one where his surname is down as just Melliar, with Foster among the forenames https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/3004574 - please merge that in too.

    Thanks.

Thanks Ann, Giddings' officers' service file shows it was a report by Ranscombe that helped confirm that Giddings had been killed in action. Interesting that they were both MM recipients, Giddings' being won for his actions with 6 Berks on the first day of the Somme.
