  1. Highlight and link names to particular campaigns i.e Gallipoli Campaign 1915-1916

Official lists of who was actually there are not always accurate - but family histories/personal diaries may shed more light on exactly who was where and when for many battles in Middle East and France/ Belgium. May have to explain that listing may not be totally accurate and not to be relied upon - as it would have been created by the "crowd"?

  2. GLOSSARY of military terms/ranks etc and their abbreviations

For non-military people such as myself - it takes a bit of work to understand how the different ranks etc work in the military - particularly abbreviations - a comprehensive list which is easy to access would be a good help

  3. By clicking on the IWM( logo top left of this page) users should return to their Dashboard page

The current method of returning requires users to scroll down this page to the Home icon & click on Lives of the First World War

  4. Automated Biographies based on facts.

Some family tree programmes have the ability to create simple biographies of individuals using the facts supplied.
eg: _______ ________ was born the ------------- in --------------. his parents were .................... He attested on the ............. at ................
    etc etc.
This would be great way of actually creating a story aside from the disparate facts that are only really a collection of evidence.

  5. Date formats

All dates should be forced to be entered nn month yyyy (e.g. 09 August 1912 - i.e. spell out/abbreviate name of month). Otherwise what will happen with, e.g., USA users - what will 09/08/1912 mean to UK/Australian vs USA users?

  6. Comments on medals

The Medal Index Cards and Medal Rolls often have additional information such as date of issue, returned (for correction or undeliverable), or being forfeited etc. It would be nice to have a comments field on the Campaign Medals page to include this information. It could go under Other Military Events > Other but it would be better to keep it in the same place as the medals themselves.

  7. Ability to upload a pdf file image.

Many images/forms are in pdf format particularly from National Archives. When trying to upload a PDF a refusal message was shown. PDF file is one of the most common file type around.

  8. Source citations need to be editable

Need to be able to amend Source Title (and other fields).

It would be useful to be able to edit the Title, for example, in order to obtain a consistent naming standard.

At the moment you have to get EVERYTHING about a source right first time. Or have to delete and start all over again!

  12. Searching by variants

Charles Van-der-Vord is the name on the medal card, but his correct name is VANDERVORD - so I have amended his record accordingly, but when searching under VANDERVORD - no Van-Der-Vord's show up, so variant searches need to be widened.

Also I have entered information and photos for Jesse John FENNER, but when searching under just he name FENNER he does not show up - why?

  13. Please make the "Connect this record to xxxxx" pop-up draggable.

When connecting a record the pop-up box is fixed (at least this is the case on a Mac) which obscures the underlying record and information on it that you are trying to use.

It would be useful if the pop-up could be dragged elsewhere to reveal the record you're connecting.

  14. Countries for adding death facts

Given the nature of the conflict the list of countries prompted for location ought to be different for death fact than for birth facts.

It would make a lot more sense if the top of the list countries for death were France, Belgium, etc rather than UK, Canada, Australia etc.

  15. Show full household transcription for censuses having linked a record

It's rather clunky to have to link each person from a family household group separately. If someone is listed on a census return as eg the father, should be possible to click on the relationship and automatically add forenames and surname to the details for the father in the life story (and similarly for other family members)

  16. Preferred image size

It would be helpful to have an indication of the preferred image size for images to be uploaded to the site. There is no point in uploading a large image (with a large file size) if it will anyway be displayed at a tenth the original size.

  17. Provide the facility to nest communities

For example, D Coy, 7 RIR (the Pals company from Jersey) would have a community, but you'd want them in a bigger community for all men from Jersey. I'd like to nest the one community inside the other, rather than have to add 300+ individuals to both.

  18. Include a wider range of relationship options for siblings and parents

Today I needed fields for half brother, half sister and adoptive brother and adoptive sister, but these were unavailable, only brother sister, half brother and half sister. I also had a situation where one of the soldiers I was submitting data for had two sets of parents - natural and adopted, and both fathers lived until at least the time of the son's marriage, and they all lived in the same house. There was no way of explaining this.

  19. Sort results by alphabetical order of surname

They are in rough alphabetical order at the moment but not strictly, so if you have a lot of results you have to look through a large number if pages.

  20. Introduce a privacy/security settings feature

They need to introduce a privacy/ security settings feature to control/screen some of the information being put on this site. As I was going about adding some of the information, it made me think that the sons/daughters of soldiers who fought in WWI are still alive and at this stage you can add birthday information etc for the children which could cause some problems as you don't seem to be able to remove certain information from certain profiles. Just a thought....
