This Forum is now closed to new posts. Thank you for taking part in the discussion.

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. The entry screens do not scroll and are way too big even for the biggest screens

Get someone who know how to make the whole site user friendly. It is way to complex even to make the simplest entry. A very ill conceived interface.

  2. Make it possible to link to official sources for free

I have already done extensive research on my family and wish to add facts linked to the official sources that I have confirmed in the past. At the moment this website will not let me do this unless I pay to see the sources again. If you want the public to put flesh on the names, you need to make it as simple as possible, and I for one will not be participating if I have to pay again for information I already have.

  3. Need to edit medal card index info

The data from the medal index card has been taken from Ancestry indexing - in the case of my grandfather his number has been incorrectly indexed, and i need to change it.

  5. Am searching for English born officer in New Zealand Otago Regiment...idea to inform when commonwealth country added

Allow people to register against a list of commonwealth countries and then email to inform when those have been added to the database...even split down to regiments when possible. It will save fruitless searching.

  6. Site accessibility

When I try to confirm registration I am told 'program cannot display the web page.' I am connected. What is wrong?

  8. Close this site

This is the most dreadfully organised site, and shows every sign of being a complete disaster. Leave such an important task to more capable sources. This site just distracts from the intentions.

  9. Connecting data - either does not work or adds in 2 lines for the 1 item?!

Finally got on to here, originally a problem with Windows Vista? (now fixed Hurrah) However, connecting B M D records either does not work or it then uploads 2 sets for the 1 item I am trying to connect. If you press remove, it then takes away both sets. I don't think this is ready for Joe public just yet?

  10. service number

Come on, transcribing a Service No. as 28859 ex 46802 ... what idiocy! Just found an ancestor who was in the Lincolnshire Regiment and then transferred to the Labour Corps with both his Service numbers concatenated in the Service No. box. If his card hadn't been available on Ancestry I would never have found him on the LFWW system, complete foolishness.

  11. There are servicemen that I know about but canot seem to find any record of them

Generally quite good but a few gaps of men I cannot find. There have been at least 4 soldiers and 2 Sailors. All of these I have Medals for or family connection.

  12. A Community that Everyone Can Contribute To.

I volunteer at a National Trust property that was as a convalescent hospital during WWI. From newspaper reports I know of only two soldiers who spent some time there but there must have been many more. Plus staff who worked there. It would be great to create a community or a group where individuals could link Life Stories to this house if they know of someone who was there during that period.

  13. communities/individuals: associate with location, and allow search by location

Allow a community to be associated with a location (or even better, set of locations), and allow searching by location, either directly, and/or with options to see other nearby communities. This will provide another way for people to find others whose research interests may overlap. Since address details are also collected for individual men, that could also be used as a search tool.

  14. communities: adding more than one link

At the moment you can only have one link associated with the description of a community. In my case I'd like to be able to link to both the main website for the organisation whose roll of honour I've been researching, but also directly to the blog where I've been publishing information on that research

  15. There seems to be no way to attach a person to a battalion within a brigade

If I look up the 9th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade it lists many individuals but it seems that although there is a brigade entry for my grandfathers brother , there is no way to add and link him to this battalion. Surly that is part of the point of this site ? You need to be ble to add mor military records and have them link !

  16. Search engine not good at finding name variations

The search engine does not seem to cope with simple name variations. For instance in the family name I was looking for a U was replaced by a W but it did not find it. Since transcription is always going to be less than 100% this needs to be resolved.

  18. Soldiers lost at Sea

Currently the design of the 'Death' part of the 'Birth, Age and Death' section - i.e. those fields used to record a soldiers place of death - make an assumption, by prompting for a 'country' of death, that all soldiers killed in WW1 died in a 'country'.

My ancestor was lost at sea when his troopship was sunk by a German submarine. So he has no 'country' of death.

This design assumption forces me to input incorrect data in this field about my ancestor.

  19. Please stop saying thank you

Am I the only one getting fed up with the thank you message that appears every time I add an external reference or update a life story? It just adds one more click to get rid of the pop up, thus slowing down the data entry process even further.

  20. Incorrect data.

The very first individual I looked at, for whom I have completed a considerable amount of research, had an incorrect service number as taken from a MRIC. However, I cannot find a simple way to correct it. I tried to do it obliquely by sharing a story, but, although I submitted it and it was accepted, I cannot find it in relation to the man - Impossible!!
