I received the following from the Durham County Record office, which confirms that #83483 and #J/50194 are the same man.

"I can confirm that the index record show’s the soldiers’ name as Thomas SIMPSON Thew.

We have checked the DLI medals database on their webpage (which is currently experiecing technical issues so you may not be able to access it at present) and there is the following information on the T S Thew Medals:

British War Medal (1914-20)
Accession Number:
4473/1
Location:
Palace Green
Monarch:
King George V
Naming:
83483 PTE. T.S. THEW. DURH.L.I. Impressed Capitals
Victory Medal (1914-18)
Accession Number:
4473/2
Location:
Palace Green
Monarch:
King George V
Naming:
83483 PTE. T.S. THEW. DURH.L.I. Impressed Capitals
There is no biographical information for this soldier and no papers to accompany the two medals.

Some of the medals donated to the DLI Collection come from collectors or private individuals who have no connection with the man who was awarded the medal, which may explain the lack of supporting information.

On Ancestry the medal index card for DLI 83483 gives the soldier’s name as Pte Thomas S. Thew.

The army number 4436074 was in the DLI Enlistment, Transfer and Discharge register index, along with alternative service numbers 83483 and J/50194."

Many thanks,

John Thew
