  9. John Thomas Abel

Lance Corporal JOHN THOMAS ABEL 748, 4th Bn., Machine Gun Guards.
John Thomas Abel was born on 8 August 1895, probably in Runhall, though he was baptised at Mattishall on 9 October 1895.
He was the son of Henry Abel and Annie Elizabeth Abel, and the younger brother of Frederick Abel.
He attended Runhall School from 13 March 1900 until 11 October 1904 when the family left the village. The following day he was enrolled in Hardingham School along with his sisters Henrietta and May. He left Hardingham School on 24 April 1909, initially to work as a market gardener.…

He was admitted to Hardingham School on 24 February 1890 and left that school on 19 October 1897 to become an Agricultural Labourer. From 1892 to 1894 he was at the school in Runhall and Coston.
He enlisted in the 4th Battalion of…

burnt document in WO 363 is very difficult to read but it seems he enlisted 23/11/16 and was born 1885 in Castle Combe. He finished as 441337 in Labour Corps and may have had earlier service numbers of 2779, 62335 or 6233_
