Suggested Life Stories

Before requesting a new Life Story, please follow these steps:

1. Check to see whether the individual meets the criteria for inclusion in Lives of the First World War: http://support.livesofthefirstworldwar.org/knowledgebase/articles/1164868-who-is-included-in-lives-of-the-first-world-war

2. Search for the individual on Lives of the First World War. Please see this page for tips on how to do so: https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/finding-a-named-individual

3. If you have information about an individual who doesn’t currently have a Life Story page, please enter the person’s name in the box labelled ‘Enter your idea’, and then post details underneath (‘Describe your idea’) with as much evidence as possible.

Evidence can be images or documents containing details about the person, website links, book references or genealogy records. If you believe that a person has more than one Life Story page that requires merging, please include the URLs.

IWM Staff and Volunteers aim to deal with your request as soon as possible. To help us to do this, please enter one request per post. Thank you.

Please suggest Life Stories that you would like to be created or merged

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

There seem to be duplicates for Thomas Jenkins. I have added to what I guess was a card from the 14/15 Star roll:
                https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/2094469

The most likely candidate on the BWM/Victory roll was #240434, but, unusually, there was no reference to his original number:
                https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/5119/41629_611411_5601-00281/4492452?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return

                This will be:
                https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/2094553

There is no evidence on either of the MICs that it is the same Thomas Jenkins, but fortunately there are three surviving service records, which appear to have many of the same documents and which I think confirm that #2540, #240434, and #315569 belong to the same Thomas Jenkins.

                I have…

                          • Stanley Rule

Around the 10 March 1914, Stanley Rule joined the British Army and chose to enlist in the Cheshire Regiment. Stanley’s entry in Soldiers Died in the Great War recorded that he enlisted at Birkenhead. At the time, Stanley had three ways to join the army, he could enlist as a regular soldier, join the Territorial Force, the forerunner of the Territorial Army, or join the Special Reserve. Stanley chose the Special Reserve, following in the footsteps of his older brother William who had served with the Reserve between September 1908 and July 1909.
When Stanley joined the Special Reserve, he…

                            • Benjamin Rule

Benjamin’s service in the British Army began when he joined the Militia on 9 December 1907 at Liverpool. Benjamin’s service record has survived as part of WO96: War Office: Militia Attestation Papers which is the only document covering his pre-war service. The Militia was part of the British Army’s reserve and Benjamin joined just prior to its reorganization. The Militia became the Special Reserve on 1 April 1908 which is what William joined in September 1908 and Stanley in March 1914. On his attestation, Benjamin recorded that he was a Butcher, living at 37 Russel Street, Birkenhead and was aged…
