Dear Anonymous - welcome to the world of indexing errors and bureaucratic mistakes. Heather is right - let me explain.
Let's start with the CWGC site:- that shows 12166, Louis Callow, "Son of John and Sarah Ann Callow, of Meriden, Coventry", Hampshire Regiment (not Pioneers).
We'll just take 12166 Callow as our search criteria and search the Medal Index Cards on Ancestry: For some reason Ancestry doesn't do a number search well and it gives 15 MICs - the *only* 12166 Callow in the Ancestry list is this:
Name: Lewis Callow
Regiment or Corps: 11th Hamp's R
Regimental Number: 12166
I'm looking at the Ancestry image and their index is correct - he is also marked as "presumed dead" on the card.
Now search the Medal Index Cards on The National Archives site for 12166 Callow. What we get is this index entry:
Medal card of Callow, Lewis. Corps: Essex Regiment. Regiment No: 12166. Rank: Private.
The TNA file was used to seed the IWM Lives site so that matches the entry found by Heather.
The only sensible explanation for all this, given that I'm looking at the image of the card of Ancestry, is that there was an *error* in the *TNA* indexing (which has worked its way through to the IWM Lives). I'm afraid there's rather a lot of TNA issues showing up.
As for "why Lewis not Louis" - that's actually quite interesting. *IF* I recall correctly, the CWGC data started with the official Army data and the families were invited to add any extra bits. I'll bet his parents did that because the comment "Son of John and Sarah Ann Callow, of Meriden, Coventry" is not usual. And I'll bet they corrected his name from Lewis to Louis at the same time (the 1911 census has Louis).
So - to summarise:
1. CWGC site has Hampshire *Regiment*
2. "why Lewis not Louis" - I believe because the Army wrote his name down wrong and his parents corrected it.
3. "why Essex Regiment" - because TNA indexed it wrong.
If you want to commemorate him correctly, you will need to add a new source to the Lives site; and add the correct facts from the evidence *using* the "Improve an Existing..." option.
This is shown as completed, but isn't.
He's on the CWGC site as Hampshire Pioneers, so if this him why Lewis not Louis and also why Essex Regiment?
