    Hello John

George's page is https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/7698528 . I have filled in the sparse information from the the medal roll. This I added as an External Reference/Copy of Official Document, the reason being that not everyone has an Ancestry membership so won't be able to view, and the URL might change in the future.
    Full reference:
    1. UK, Naval Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1972
    2. WWI Medals and Awards Naval War Medals - Silver War Badge Applications: Other ranks S-Z
    3. Ancestry [In this instance how the information was obtained]
    4. Name: G S Thew Medal or Award: Silver War Badge Service Year: 1914-1918 Service Location: Europe Campaign or Service: World War I Service Number: 136564

I happen to have Ancestry membership so it was no problem. I don't have access to Fold3 as I'm more of a genealogy than a military researcher.

    All the best

    Rosemary

    Hi Rosemary,

Thanks again for your fast reply and tip re http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk

I use the NA as a back up and download the free records but have now also spent several times £3.50 to access Thew war records with very little information not available elsewhere. Ho hum. :)

Re George Smith Thew (1860-1932), he's Royal Navy 136564 and is in:

UK, WWI Pension Ledgers and Index Cards, 1914-1923 as George Smith Thew

UK, Naval Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1972 for SWB as G S Thew

    Hello John

Sorry to be a bit of a pain, but again we need the sources for the information. Preferably URLs and if not then the archival references. If you could add rank as well that would help.

I have looked on the UK National Archives http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk under WO for military records and ADM for naval. There would appear to be a large gap in men named Thew, but if you can search and find whoever you are looking for then that is an excellent source.

    Many thanks

    Rosemary
