Suggested Life Stories

Before requesting a new Life Story, please follow these steps:

1. Check to see whether the individual meets the criteria for inclusion in Lives of the First World War: http://support.livesofthefirstworldwar.org/knowledgebase/articles/1164868-who-is-included-in-lives-of-the-first-world-war

2. Search for the individual on Lives of the First World War. Please see this page for tips on how to do so: https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/finding-a-named-individual

3. If you have information about an individual who doesn’t currently have a Life Story page, please enter the person’s name in the box labelled ‘Enter your idea’, and then post details underneath (‘Describe your idea’) with as much evidence as possible.

Evidence can be images or documents containing details about the person, website links, book references or genealogy records. If you believe that a person has more than one Life Story page that requires merging, please include the URLs.

IWM Staff and Volunteers aim to deal with your request as soon as possible. To help us to do this, please enter one request per post. Thank you.

Please suggest Life Stories that you would like to be created or merged

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

      • Henry Whitbourne

Henry Whitbourne, born 1868, East Hoathly. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery, service number 54868, 11/5/1886 and was discharged 18/601907 with an exemplary record. He re-enlisted in RFA 15/9/1914 and was discharged 23/8/1919. His army service record link is:
        https://search.livesofthefirstworldwar.org/record?id=gbm%2fwo363-4%2f007282910%2f00954&parentid=gbm%2fwo363-4%2f7282910%2f89%2f948
There are several other army records for this soldier which I have not included because the records of 2 soldiers, the first called Whitbourne and the second Whitbourn are intermingled.
I am unable to find his life story so could you please create for him. Thanks

          • Philip Walter EVANS

Would you please create a Life Story for Philip Walter EVANS, RAF 342011.

Although he didn’t join up until 1920 (the day after his 18th birthday) and, sadly, only served for 2 months before he died, the CWGC accepted him as a war death and he has a CWGC headstone. He died on 9/9/1920 and is buried in St John’s Churchyard, Sidcup (then Kent). https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/368378/evans,-philip-walter/

His records are in AIR 79/2860 (born 13th July 1902 at Woolwich).

            Many thanks
            Diane Rowland

No strong feelings about which should be primary, the first listed here covers brief service with Oxf and Bucks - there is a surviving service record to link with this period of service which shows he was discharged as "being unlikely to become an efficient soldier" due to chronic deafness. It seems he was determined to do his bit somehow so performed civilian service with the Army Service Corps, Canteen Section, Expeditionary Force Canteens which is the second of the listed cards (I've done some editing on this one as the MIC had been badly mistranscribed).
