Suggested Life Stories

Before requesting a new Life Story, please follow these steps:

1. Check to see whether the individual meets the criteria for inclusion in Lives of the First World War: http://support.livesofthefirstworldwar.org/knowledgebase/articles/1164868-who-is-included-in-lives-of-the-first-world-war

2. Search for the individual on Lives of the First World War. Please see this page for tips on how to do so: https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/finding-a-named-individual

3. If you have information about an individual who doesn’t currently have a Life Story page, please enter the person’s name in the box labelled ‘Enter your idea’, and then post details underneath (‘Describe your idea’) with as much evidence as possible.

Evidence can be images or documents containing details about the person, website links, book references or genealogy records. If you believe that a person has more than one Life Story page that requires merging, please include the URLs.

IWM Staff and Volunteers aim to deal with your request as soon as possible. To help us to do this, please enter one request per post. Thank you.

Please suggest Life Stories that you would like to be created or merged

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

            • Private E R Warrren, 25097, D Coy, 11th RWS, 163 Bde, 41 Div. Letters home.

I have the letters written by my grandfather from France, Italy, and after capture, from Germany, dated 1917-18. these describe his life and experiences, particularly his being shot on 25 March 2018 near Bapaume, his capture and subsequent treatment as a prisoner in Parchem, and repatriation following the Armistice. I have verified his information by consulting the Battalion diary. I have a photograph of him with his training section in 1917, when near Tunbridge Wells. All this makes an interesting story which should be shared.

I suspected that James Welsman (https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/4698388) and J Welsman (https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/5264135) might be the same person. To establish whether they were the same man, I asked a researcher at the regimental museum to investigate this for me. He said “I am certain that he is the J Welsman, who appears in some of the records and that he is the James W Welsman from Exeter, described in the 1901 Census as a Post Office letter carrier, aged 30, living with his wife Edith, daughter Amy and 4 sons James, Albert, Harry and Reginald. The news clipping (Western…

                                        • William Charles Thirkettle G38657

William Charles Thirkettle is my grandfather, I have his medals, several war time photographs, and some of his military papers i.e. Army Forms Z.11 Protection Certificate and Certificate of Identity, and Z.21 Certificate of Disembodiment. I am researching my family history, so have other relevant information, i.e. birth certificate, and can link at least one other life story to him.
