  1. John Tremayne (Babington)

I am uncertain about which name to use for this person. He served in both wars, born Babington, brother of Philip Babington, but changed his name in 1945 to his mother's maiden name (Tremayne) to avoid confusion with his brother.
I have called him Tremayne, but put "served as" Babington - but when I search on John Tremayne Babington, he is not found.
Any suggestions as to how he should be presented for best usage?

        • Royal Australian Navy

Following up one of our unknowns on Singapore Cenotaph H Collins I found a reference to HMAS Sydney's action with the Emden. The following received DSMs but it doesn't seem as if the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) records are included on Lives database. We have one man who was in RAN as far as Alexandria enroute to join RFC when the merchant ship he transferred to was torpedoed in the Med (SS Glengartney), so no record of him either (AS Hugh Tregarthen RAN 6313)
For services in the action between H.M.A.S. "Sydney" and the German Cruiser "Emden" on the 9th…

            • George Isaac Duke 48046

I have remembered Pte George Isaac Duke 48046 who was in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He died on the 9th April 1917. Named on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. I remembered him as I found a medal with his details on in my fathers possessions. Also with this medal were two napkin rings with the initials J.M. Duke. I have no idea who this man was. All our family came from Somerset although my father spent time recuperating in Northumberland during the 2nd World War after he had a motor cycle accident during his duties as a dispatch rider.…

                • Lifestory Heading

                  Hello,
                  Please could you help?
I have researched Captain Alyn Reginald James of the Royal Flying Corp. Although that shows on his record as his last unit and ranks, the title of the lifestory does not match, and it shows him as an earlier rank/unit. How can this be changed, and what am I doing wrong?
                  His Reference is:

                  Kind Regards,
                  Wayne

                      • Mountbatten Family change of name by Royal Warrant 14th July 1917

I do have some thoughts - firstly names often change legally on Marriage and also following Deed Poll.
The change of name to Mountbatten was by Royal Warrant - so I think that this should be respected.
I can't pretend to understand this blog but I get the gist. The Battenberg Family name in the U.K changed to Mountbatten on the 14th July 1917, and as I stand for the National Anthem I feel that Lives of the First World War should respect this.
                        Thanks

                              • Using the same image on multiple lives

I have 19 plaques of names for Mendi casualties, and over 600 names, each plaque covering roughly 30 men. It would save space if I could use the same image for the 30 men, instead I have to reload that image 30 times. Cant you find a way where you can share an image on more than one life? or does it exist already?

Desborough, although his home was in
Leicester, and he was well known in the

some time he eventually had to join up, and
enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service.

                                      • Community Search Function

As a postgraduate researcher, it would be incredibly beneficial to be able to search communities. For my research for example, wounded soldiers, railwaymen, ambulance trains, conscientious objectors etc. grouped together collectively would be an excellent research resource.

                                        • Duplicate records for Frank Leonard Rowe 13641

Frank Rowe enlisted with their the Australia forces along with his friend from Trinity Congregational Church, Brixton, London, Edward Munro. See:
                                          https://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/uploadedFiles/moretonbay/living/libraries/anzac/munro-family.pdf
Can the two records for Frank under service no. 13641 be amalgamated please? You will see I have remembered both but I won't be adding any data until they have been joined up.

                                          Many thanks
                                          Peter Young
