If you have questions that the team or other users can answer, or just want to leave some feedback for discussion, post it here. FOR REQUESTS TO CREATE NEW LIFE STORIES, OR TO MERGE DUPLICATES, PLEASE POST THE DETAILS ON THESUGGESTED LIFE STORIESPAGE: http://support.livesofthefirstworldwar.org/forums/246125-suggested-life-stories

Do you have a question or comment about the site?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Communities

Surely those people who do a lot of research and contribute massively to the IWM records (I myself have posted hundreds of additions) should have free access to Communities.
I have much more research I would like to add but I cannot afford to pay for multiple sites - I'm already a member of Ancestry and Find My Past.

      • Advice needed about a man who took a new identity; official records show new name.

This case is highly unusual, and I am wondering which way is the best way to record the newer (but more factual) information.
"George Marshe" (https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/7571885) is in fact Frank Myburgh, and place of birth was Cape Town, not Essex, as per his war records.

It's all fully explained in this entry: https://www.geni.com/people/Francis-Gerhard-Myburgh-a-k-a-George-Marshe/6000000039901456692

I would appreciate some ideas on how best to record the new facts; I am assuming that the main record has to remain as George Marshe because that's how he was known during WW1 (and for some time before that).

        Can anyone who responds to…

        • John Tremayne (Babington)

I am uncertain about which name to use for this person. He served in both wars, born Babington, brother of Philip Babington, but changed his name in 1945 to his mother's maiden name (Tremayne) to avoid confusion with his brother.
I have called him Tremayne, but put "served as" Babington - but when I search on John Tremayne Babington, he is not found.
Any suggestions as to how he should be presented for best usage?

          • Audio recordings

How besy do I record the experirnces of military and political vrtrrans from WWII and subsrwuent colonial wars? Were I to record their remeniscences through a 'Voice Recognition' software, I should be able to edit it on 'Word' or some similar system. Can the IWM or any individual offer me advice? Please copy to me on

                          • Very helpful and polite

I'm amazed at how you do it. There always seems such a lot of work to do.
I'm coming across a few Nurses who have died in service but have slipped through the net - finding information on the V.A.D Cards - I would like to continue to add their Life Stories -
                            Thanks

                            • Unable to correct birth info

                              Serjeant John Herbert Dunbabin, DCM:
                              https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/4980199
appears to have a database problem.
I have "improved" his name to include the middle name, and his date of birth to May 1876 from the previous estimate of 1877. Both these fresh values show correctly under Facts.
The name displays correctly in the header but does not appear in search results. The d.o.b. ALWAYS shows as 1877.
I have contacted the submitter of the birth estimate, but she can not change things either.

                              Can this be investigated please?

                              • Are displayed ranks the highest known rank of the person, or their rank at the end of WW1?

For those who continued their army career post-war, does Lives of the First World War show their highest rank achieved, their highest rank during the war, or the rank they began their WW1 career at?

I'm searching for Lieutenant Colonel George Lees, a Canadian serving in the British Army. He joined the war as a teenager in 1918, presumably as a private, but continued his army career afterwards and became Lt Cl.
Not sure which rank I should be searching under. Lt Cl only brings up one result, which I'm not sure is him, but Pte brings up hundreds.

The image problem that we had a few weeks ago appears to be back again. I have spent ages trying to upload images only to have them fail time after time. I am also seeing that when selecting an image for a specific event it does not show even after a few refreshes.

                                          Hello,
                                          Please could you help?
I have researched Captain Alyn Reginald James of the Royal Flying Corp. Although that shows on his record as his last unit and ranks, the title of the lifestory does not match, and it shows him as an earlier rank/unit. How can this be changed, and what am I doing wrong?
                                          His Reference is:

                                          Kind Regards,
                                          Wayne
