William Henry Cecil Thomas, Private in Ox & Bucks Light Infantry
He is my Great Uncle Cecil. Killed on the Somme Aug 16, 1916. No known grave. On the memorial at Thiepval. Ran a sweet shop and newsagent with his wife Elsie in Torquay. Married one year when he died. No kids. His brother, Reginald, survived the trenches but Reg's favourite son Roy (Major Leslie Roy Thomas - my Uncle) was killed at Arnhem in 1944 aged 23. Recently married. No kids.

I went over to the Somme with a group last year. (2016) It was the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme and Uncle Cecil's death. We went round all the war graves. Site after endless manicured site, beautifully heart-breaking in the quiet fields of France. Then found my Great Uncle's name engraved high up on Thiepval Memorial. Deeply moving.
